Long-term care homes understaffed: Union

Nov 28, 2014

The physical and emotional needs of Ontario residents in long-term care homes are being neglected by the demands on time for overworked caregivers, the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions charged during a visit to Brockville on Wednesday.

OCHU regional vice-president Kevin Tyrell and RPN representative Dorothy Winterburn laid out their concerns – with two St. Lawrence Lodge employees lending their vigorous agreement – during a presentation yesterday at the Brockville Legion.

Tyrell said the Liberal government has not lived up to a long-standing commitment to improve care at such facilities and “staffing levels have not kept pace with the ever-complex demands of residents.”
